(União Brasil), former president of the City Council of , says he respects diesel when renewing the city’s fleet. He, however, continues to see the supply of energy for 100% electric vehicles with difficulty.
São Paulo will need to replace around 3,500 buses by the end of the year, as they have already reached the ten-year deadline set by law. The former councilor and political ally of the mayor was the author of a project that allowed half of the new units to be powered by diesel, on December 18th.
Nunes, however, (16) and required that the new units be battery-powered (today there are only 290). “He must have better information than me to implement the measures. My understanding is a little different”, says Leite.
The leader of União Brasil in the municipality says that one “would be wonderful for the city”, but estimates that it will cost R$10 billion, in addition to the difficulty of changing so many vehicles immediately. The main concern of businesspeople in the sector, he says, is energy supply.
According to its old proposal, half of the new buses would be electric and half would have a Euro 6 diesel engine, which follows European standards. “But I respect it, let’s wait for the result”, declares Leite.
At the suggestion of councilors from the Nunes base, a point in the sanctioned law allows concessionaires to also use buses powered by natural gas, which is criticized by experts for causing even more emissions than those powered by diesel.
