To live and visit: they are the best cities in the world in every aspect, according to Time Out experts. Porto is 8th, Lisbon 12th.
Time Out magazine’s city experts have made one of the world’s 50 best cities for 2025 after analyzing thousands.
“Quality of life was a key factor in our ranking this year”, it is written in the article, and to evaluate it, interviews with inhabitants of the city, who spoke about various aspects, from gastronomy, nightlife, security, lifestyle, green spaces, among many others.
However, the ranking is made not only based on these testimonies, but also by experts. The one at the top is Cape Townin South Africa. Full of beautiful beaches, “of history and cultural significance, Cape Town offers visitors a multitude of options to learn, explore and have fun, all without spending a lot”, guarantees Time Out. 97 % of locals said the city makes them happy.
Follow Bangkokcapital of Thailand, described as “one of the most welcoming cities in the world”, and new Yorkin the USA, in third place, considered by experts as the “most exciting city on the planet right now, with 78% of New Yorkers — the highest number on the list — describing it as such”.
After Melbourne, London, New Orleans and Mexico City, comes the Porto, in eighth place.
“It was considered fourth most beautiful city on the listwith 78% of local residents describing it as such. Porto Alegre residents are also satisfied with where they live — 80% say they are happier in Porto than anywhere else“.
Time Out describes Porto as a “drop-dead gorgeous” city and “the people of Porto, who give life to the city, also deserve an award”, for being “masters in the art of hospitality“. The team recommends the beach, gastronomy and public spaces.
Further ahead, after Shanghai, Copenhagen and Chicago, Lisbon, in 12th position.

And they even give examples of the liveliness of Lisbon, such as Praça das Flores, in Príncipe Real, considered “a melting pot of new trends with a great atmosphere.”
“Lisbon was considered the third most accessible city to see art. It also ranked fifth in terms of safety, with 62% of local residents saying they would describe the city as safe”, Time Out also points out.
