According to the statement, Russia’s offensive is taking place in all directions. The data cannot be independently verified, Reuters warns.

Russian forces have already managed to regain almost two-thirds of the territory that Ukraine occupied in the Kursk region in western Russia. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Friday. Moscow’s statement, according to Reuters, cannot be independently verified, writes TASR.

Russian troops, according to the ministry quoted by the TASS agency, “liberated” 63.2 percent – 802 out of 1,268 square kilometers – of the territory of the Kursk border region originally occupied by Ukrainian troops, who unexpectedly invaded there at the beginning of last August.

“The offensive of the Russian troops is taking place in all directions. The enemy has significant losses and is retreating from the occupied territories despite the deployment of additional reserves,” the Ministry of Defense claimed in a statement. It attributed the credit mainly to the paratroopers, marines of the Pacific and Black Sea Fleets and members of the motorized rifle regiment.

According to estimates by Ukrainian and Western officials, Russia has deployed approximately 12,000 North Korean soldiers to help the Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed earlier this year that both Russian and North Korean forces had suffered heavy losses in fighting near the border. In August 2024, Zelenskyi said that the Ukrainian offensive on the territory of Russia aims to create a buffer zone to prevent Russian attacks on Ukraine.
