Media matters have not yet been discussed in the negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP, but the boundaries of shame are already falling. Two FPÖ MPs were caught by French journalists in a social gathering in Simmering, lambasting their potential coalition partner and the EU. The Viennese FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp and General Secretary Christian Hafenecker came out to justify themselves and targeted the messenger, not the perpetrators. Nepp insults the STANDARD, which published the French research in Austria, in fecal language, Hafenecker holds out the prospect of drying up press funding. It doesn’t even occur to either of them that the statements at the regulars’ table might have been problematic.
