The countries also call for the implementation of the agreement.
Leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations (G7) have described the ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian Gaza Strip as significant progress and called on Israel and the Palestinian radical movement Hamas to work towards its full implementation.
“This is significant progress,” the G7 said in a statement, calling on “all parties to engage constructively” in the next phases of the talks, according to AFP, “to help ensure its full implementation and a permanent cessation of hostilities.”
The ceasefire agreement, which also includes the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, must be approved by Israel’s security cabinet before it can take effect. Negotiations on the terms of a permanent end to the war should follow.
The G7 also reaffirmed its support for Israel’s defense against security threats and called on Iran and its regional allies to refrain from any further attack against Israel. In its statement, the G7 also emphasized the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip” and warned that living conditions there continue to deteriorate.
“We ask that all parties allow the safe, rapid and undisturbed passage of humanitarian aid and ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers,” the G7 appealed.
