The historic European nuclear cemetery project starts: 500 meters underground for 100,000 years

Starting shot of the historic project of the European nuclear cemetery. This is a construction that has already started in Sweden and that plans to be 500 meters underground for 100,000 years.

As reported by the Polish media TVN24the design tasks have started to launch the second facility to store highly radioactive waste in the world.

The Minister of the Environment, Romina Pourmokhtari, has spoken about these plans and has assured that “It is difficult to overestimate the importance for Sweden and the climate transition that the construction of the final deposit is underway.” “They said it wouldn’t work, but here we are,” he added.

Sweden’s idea is to respond to the requests of the World Nuclear Association. It estimates that there are about 300,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel that must be disposed of across the planet.

To date, the only recourse is to store them in cooling ponds near the reactors in which they were created. In fact, efforts are being made to abandon fossil fuels.

The final deposit at Forsmark, located about 150 kilometers north of Stockholm, will be made up of 60 kilometers of tunnels that will be 500 meters deep in rock more than 1.9 billion years old.
