The common medlar comes from Asia Minor, where it has been valued for thousands of years. Over time, it also spread to the Old Continent. It was a real hit in the Middle Ages, and its sweet edible fruits were used for juices and preserves for centuries.

Even in the Polish People’s Republic, our grandmothers eagerly ate them, however Currently, medlar is not popular even though it is in season in winter. This is a big mistake, because in terms of health benefits it outperforms the popular lemon.

Growing medlar in Poland is not a particular challenge. All you need to do is provide it with a position protected from strong winds and a permeable, slightly moist substrate. It is a frost-resistant plant that is also resistant to diseases and pests.

Remember, however, that the common medlar requires patience from its owner. Usually bears fruit only 5-7 years after planting, although two-year-old strains can produce several fruits a year. However, it has a decorative appearance. It blooms at the turn of May and June, with stunning white flowers.

Medlars contain a lot of vitamin C, are filling and have a high iron content. You will also find fiber, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium, as well as vitamin B, which has a beneficial effect on the nervous system and muscles, and numerous flavonoids (according to Iranian research from 2022).

Medlar berries have a positive effect on immunity. As they are superior to lemons in many respects, they may be considered a healthier fruit, but they are only edible when ripe enough. They are harvested after frosts in winter – at the end of November, in December, and some varieties also in January, which is why they are called a winter delicacy.

After aging (they should stay cold for about 4 weeks), they begin to taste like baked apples or sweet apple pie. Are delicious, especially when used to prepare sweet jams, tea juices or liqueurs.
