US President-elect Donald Trump had his first telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping since leaving the White House in 2021.

According to Trump, they talked about TikTok, fentanyl and trade, among other topics, the American wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“The call went very well for China and the US,” Trump wrote. “My expectation is that we will solve many problems together, starting immediately,” said the president-elect. “We discussed trade balance, fentanyl, TikTok and many other topics. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe!”

The call took place just days before the inauguration ceremony of the new US president, scheduled to take place in Washington, where a senior Chinese official, Vice President Han Zheng, will be present.

Trump’s national security team had already established contact with authorities in Beijing, but the call marks the return of direct dialogue between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies.

The conversation between Trump and Xi is relevant, considering the history of tensions between the United States and China, especially on trade and security issues. The last direct interaction between them occurred four years ago.

Analysts expect the conversation to pave the way for deeper discussions on trade, technology and security, areas that have been sources of friction between the two countries.
