Two people have died in the fire that occurred this morning in a building on Juan de la Cosa street in Santander, in the center of the city, according to the City Council. The fire originated in a mattress on the fifth floor of number 33 Juan de la Cosa after nine in the morning, according to sources from the emergency teams. Above the fifth there is an attic in which there were three people, two of whom have died and the other has been transferred to the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital, as explained by the mayor of Santander, Gema Igual.
The fire has mainly affected the highest floors of the building, whose structure is made of wood, and firefighters have been able to remove several people who were inside the building using ladders. According to municipal sources, in addition to the Firefighters, the Local and National Police have come to intervene in this event. Also several ambulances, at least seven so far, and several advanced life support vehicles. Scientific Police personnel have also attended the scene, while eyewitnesses point out that the paramedics have had to treat several people.
A neighbor explained that they found out because “they started ringing the bells” warning that there was a fire and asking everyone to come out. “They scared us all. There was a man, the one who cleans the stairs, who started calling everyone. “We ran out and saw the smoke coming out,” said this woman.
