Around 35 people were injured in a cable car accident in a Spanish ski resort

About 35 people were injured, many apparently seriously, in a chairlift accident in the Spanish ski resort of Astún in the Pyrenees near the border with France on Saturday. TASR informs about this according to the AFP agency, referring to the statements of local authorities and regional media reports.

“We are talking about around 30 to 35 injured people, including serious, very serious and less serious injuries,” Miguel Ángel Clavero, head of the rescue service of the Autonomous Community of Aragon, where the resort is located, told TVE public television. According to him, the accident was apparently caused by a malfunction of one of the from the pulleys on the supporting rope, as a result of which several seats fell from the cable car. The cause of the accident is already being investigated by the relevant authorities.

Some local media report up to 39 injured people, eight of whom are said to be in a serious condition and another nine in a very serious condition. Five helicopters and at least a dozen ambulances were dispatched to the resort. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Public television TVE reported that approximately 80 people were stuck on the chairlift immediately after the accident. The resort was closed. The head of the regional government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, is heading there. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on the X social network that he was offered help by Madrid.
