The federal government announced, this Friday (17), that 1,194 familieswith candidates elected during the 2024 municipal electionswill have the benefit of Bolsa Família or Auxílio Gás dos Brasileiros canceled starting this month.

Among them, 7 belong to mayors, 19 to vice-mayors and 1,168 to councilors.

Families are prevented from entering social programs during the mandate period. According to a note released by the Ministry, another 5,306 families, who were not beneficiaries, but were identified in the Single Registry, were denied entry into the program.

“Beneficiary families, which have members identified as candidates elected in the 2024 elections, will have their benefits from Brazilian Gas Aid canceled from January 2025,” says the rule published in the Official Gazette of the Union.

The document was signed by the secretaries of the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, Rosane da Cunha and Magdalena Sophia Oliveira.

According to the ministry, the identification was made through studies and cross-referencing of data provided by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

“Based on studies and data crossing, occurrences are identified and treatment actions are adopted, with a view to interrupting the payment of benefits and preventing families from entering the Program, when they are not yet beneficiaries”, states the director of the Department of Benefits from the National Secretariat for Citizenship Income (Senarc), Caroline Paranayba.

Confirming the existence of an elected candidate in the family, who has taken office, cancellation of the benefit cannot be reversed under any circumstances, says the Ministry.

For the return to the programs to happen, a new pre-qualification and selection process is necessary, which only takes place after the elected politician is in office.

Today, access to the program is only possible for families with a monthly income of up to R$218.00 per person, or, as a protection rule, with a monthly income of up to half the minimum wage.
