It was “dignified and right” at the big thanksgiving and farewell mass in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna in honor of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, who is now retiring at the age of 80. The Federal President spoke words of honor, although, as he often does, he felt a little mischievous – he addressed Schönborn as “Pontifex Austriacus”. Pontifex – that means “bridge builder”, but is also the title of the Pope (“Pontifex Maximus”) and was previously the name for ancient Roman high priests.
