Group of jurists asks Lula to appoint women to the STJ – 01/17/2025 – Brasília Hoje

A group of magistrates, jurists and members of civil society sent a letter to the president () asking for the appointment of two women to the vacancies of ministers of the (Superior Court of Justice).

The demand has already been made by members and legal entities as the retirement of ministers Assusete Magalhães and Laurita Vaz approaches.

The two triple lists were to be sent to Lula in October last year. That month, a group of people with the same request to the president.

There is no established deadline for Lula’s approval. After passing through him, the names will go to the Senate for hearings.

“The replacement by 2 men in the 2 seats of the Superior Court of Justice previously occupied by women, if carried out, would constitute an undeniable setback, including with regard to the image of our country in the international community”, says the letter.

On social media, movements that support the cause recovered excerpts from Lula’s speech after the results of the 2023 elections, in which the president highlighted the importance of female participation.

“Actions speak louder than words. It’s time to show coherence and commitment to Brazilian women! The choice of two women for vacancies in the STJ is essential so that we don’t go backwards in the fight for gender equality in the Judiciary”, says the post.
