The Hlas-SD party rejects any discussion about the possible withdrawal of Slovakia from the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). She was reacting to the words of Tibor Gašpar, Vice-Chairman of the Slovak National Council for Smer-SD, who on Friday (January 17) admitted the possibility of withdrawal from both communities as a last resort.
“The HLAS party enforces a sovereign foreign policy in which Slovak interests must come first. However, we reject any discussion about the possible withdrawal of Slovakia from the EU or NATO,” party spokeswoman Michaela Eliášová said.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also responded to Gašpar’s words. On the social network, he published a quote from a memorandum of the highest constitutional officials from September 2024, in which signed up to support the unquestionable membership of the Slovak Republic in the EU and NATO.
In the STVR news, Gašpar commented on the proposal of the opposition SaS to enshrine Slovakia’s membership in the EU and NATO in the constitution. The deputy speaker of the parliament reminded that The Slovak Republic joined both communities on the basis of a referendum, and the same rule should also apply to a possible exit, which he described as a last resort. At the same time, he stated that Smer-SD does not have the priority and goal of withdrawing from the EU or NATO at the moment.
“But both of these associations evolve over time. They may change some basic questions or operating principles that existed at the time when we joined them. Therefore, the door must remain open for the situation that we would eventually consider an extreme solution anyway , such as exiting the EU,” said Gaspar.
