The first wave of hostages is expected to be released on Sunday (19 January); there were 24 ministers in favor, while 8 were opposed

Israeli government ministers approved this Friday (17 January 2025) the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, marking progress towards ending the conflict that has lasted more than 1 year. The decision was approved by 24 ministerswhile 8 Opposed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the release of the 1st wave of hostages in the custody of the extremist group will start on Sunday (19.Jan). It is expected that at least 3 hostages will be released.

The agreement includes the gradual release of 33 hostages and the release of hundreds of Palestinians detained in Israel, in addition to the cessation of bombings in the Gaza Strip.

The ratification of the agreement by the Council of Ministers was the last requirement on the Israeli side for the implementation of the agreed terms, which also provide for the return of around 100 people kidnapped by Hamas since the beginning of the conflict.

Opposition to the agreement within the Israeli government was notable. Itamar Ben-Gvir, Minister of National Security, criticized the agreement, arguing that it would compromise war gains by freeing Palestinian militants and withdrawing from strategic areas in Gaza.
