The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) considers the statement of the Deputy Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Tibor Gašpar, about possible withdrawal from the EU and NATO as evidence of the collapse of the government coalition. At the same time, he points out that such a statement is in direct contradiction to the Program Statement of the Government and also to the position of the President of the Slovak Republic.
“We consider the EU and NATO to be a guarantee of the protection of security and economic security for our citizens, our statehood and the inviolability of our borders,” its communications department interpreted the movement’s position. The Christian Democrats believe that Gašpar’s statements are also a maneuver by the Smer-SD party to cover up the “botched consolidation package”.
In the STVR news, Gašpar commented on the proposal of the opposition SaS to enshrine Slovakia’s membership in the EU and NATO in the constitution. The deputy speaker of the parliament reminded that The Slovak Republic joined both communities on the basis of a referendum, and the same rule should also apply to a possible exit, which he described as a last resort.
At the same time, he stated that Smer-SD does not have the priority and goal of withdrawing from the EU or NATO at the moment. “But both of these associations evolve over time. They may change some basic questions or operating principles that existed at the time when we joined them. Therefore, the door must remain open for the situation that we would eventually consider an extreme solution anyway , such as exiting the EU,” said Gaspar.
