Local authorities: how are the accounts in Lisbon and Porto? The Political Fact anticipates the scenarios

There are no marks yet, but voters should be called to vote at locations sometime between September and October. PS and PSD carry out accounts in the country’s two main chambers.

The nomination of Alexandra Leitão for the Lisbon municipal race on behalf of the Socialist Party clarified a race that could be the main barometer to see who wins and who loses this year’s municipal races.

The PS seems committed to a left-wing front that, for now, has everything going almost right.

O Left Bloc has already advanced under the name of Carolina Serrãobut this does not mean that the party wants to go to votes alone, reaffirming “its openness to a broad programmatic debate”.

O Livre has insisted on the idea that, unlike the Assembly, in municipalities it is not possible to create contraptions and, therefore, whoever has one more vote wins the presidency. THE PAN also does not stay out of conversations on the left.

The PCP seems to be more difficult to convince which was the first to present a candidate and, based on the results of the 2021 municipal elections, is a left-wing party, after the PS, with more electoral weight.

Despite everything, a left front could be a headache for Carlos Moedas who four years ago achieved a narrow victory by 2,294 votes and had to serve a term with a left-wing majority in the executive.

Contrary to what happened in 2021, Moedas should be able to convince the Liberal Initiative to join this year’s coalition but even so, he continues to have Chega free on the right.

André Ventura’s party does not have good memories of the last municipal elections in Lisbon (it was unable to elect councilors), but with a strong candidate this year, the scenario could change.

In Porto, the PSD is also full of obstacles. The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pedro Duarte, is Luís Montenegro’s choice, but even without Rui Moreira, the current president’s independent movement must go to votes with Filipe Araújo, until now Moreira’s deputy and who this Friday saw more than 140 Porto personalities declared support for him.

If we add to this the also possible candidacy of the doctor António Araújo, one from Chega and the other from the Liberal Initiative, Manuel Pizarro can rub his hands with joy.
