Second dissolution in less than a year for Madeirans, who go to the polls on March 23 for the third round in a year and a half.
After the State Council was convened, this was the expected outcome. The President of the Republic announced this Friday the dissolution of the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira, a decision that received a favorable opinion from the Council of State, and marked early regional elections for March 23.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made this announcement through a note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, which states that the Council of State, meeting this Friday, “gave a favorable opinion, for the purposes of paragraph a) of article 145 of the Constitution, to the dissolution of the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira”.
“The President of the Republic therefore decided, after listening to the political parties represented there and the opinion of the Council of State, that he will dissolve the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira and schedule the elections for March 23, 2025”, reads- if on the same note.
Second dissolution in less than a year
This is the second time that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolves the Madeira parliament. The was decreed in March last year, following the resignation of Miguel Albuquerque of the head of the regional executive, constituted defendant in a process related to suspicions of corruptionand led to the holding of early legislative elections on May 26, of which the majority government: PSD and CDS-PP reached a parliamentary agreement, without however having an absolute majority.
On December 17 last year, the Legislative Assembly of Madeira submitted to the PSD minority government headed by Miguel Albuquerque presented by Chega, with votes in favor of all opposition parties.
The President of the Republic after having heard the parties represented in the Regional Legislative Assembly of Madeira on January 7, who unanimously expressed their support for the dissolution of the regional parliament and the call for new early elections.
Madeirans will vote for the 15th time for the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly. These will be the third elections in Madeira in about a year and a half.
