A group of scientists, led by Professor Rupert Thornton from the University of Arizona, made a unique discovery – an underground cave system over 300 million years old was identified in the Rocky Mountain range.
The expedition lasted 14 months, and the research results were published in the scientific journal Geological Review (GR).
The new network of caves, called the “Crystal Labyrinth”, surprised the researchers with the abundance of quartz formations, rare in such structures. The system stretches over 45 kilometers in length, and the maximum depth reaches 312 meters.
“We are facing an unprecedented case of preservation of ancient geological structures. These caves were formed during an era when the region was under an ancient ocean,” explained Thornton.
Using advanced methods of 3D mapping and spectral analysis, the researchers studied fossils of marine organisms and mineral deposits. These discoveries provide valuable information about climate conditions millions of years ago. Of special interest were the unique crystalline formations, which have not been identified in other places on the planet.
“Each new corridor offers us surprises. This discovery could rewrite our knowledge of the geological history of the region,” Thornton pointed out.
Scientists plan to continue studying the cave system, focusing on paleoclimate analysis. Future research promises to reveal even more mysteries of the ancient world.
