After the collapse of the La Niña phenomenon, its opposite El Niño begins. According to meteorologists, it is expected to develop later in 2025 and affect the upcoming winter season. It should bring moisture, storms and more precipitation, writes the website.

“While the current winter is dominated by La Niña, long-term forecasts show the first signs of an El Niño event in the 2025/2026 season,” experts say.

Models for the summer of 2025 show a warm current extending over the Pacific and cold currents disappearing. “There are many situations where La Niña has recurred. But that is not a very likely scenario for 2025,” the meteorologists add.

World Meteorological Organization models suggest that the current La Niña is expected to be short-lived. “Looking at the mid-summer ocean anomaly forecast maps, the models predict an area of warm anomalies over the equatorial Pacific. These anomalies indicate a relatively rapid disintegration of the La Niña phenomenon during the spring,” the experts specified, adding that it should occur at the end of February.

This will bring moisture and precipitation with it and will affect both temperature and snowfall during the coming winter. It is also supposed to appear over Canada high pressure that will cause severe thunderstorms.
