Although relations between the US and China are strained, they are expected to be one of the main topics during Trump’s presidency.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump wants to visit China after taking office. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal on Saturday, writes TASR according to a Reuters report.
According to the WSJ, Trump told his advisers that he would like to travel to China during his first 100 days in office. The incoming US president and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed a one-on-one meeting through their representatives, the WSJ reported. According to the newspaper, one possibility is that Trump will invite the Chinese president to the United States.
The newly elected US president spoke on the phone with Xi Jinping on Friday and called the call “a good conversation for both China and the US”. He added that he expects them to solve many problems together. “Together with President Sim, we will do everything to make the world more peaceful and safer,” he said.
Relationships will be questionable
US-China relations are expected to be one of the main topics of Trump’s second term, which begins on Monday, January 20, according to the AP. According to the American agency, the tension between the two superpowers is especially threatening in the business area, in the issue of technology and the future of the island of Taiwan.
Trump has previously warned that unless Beijing does more to stop the trade in the highly addictive drug fentanyl, he will impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods. During the election campaign, he also threatened tariffs on Chinese goods exceeding 60 percent.
However, AP reminds that in the past Trump highlighted his relationship with President Sim. He also stated that China could help settle international crises, such as the war in Ukraine.
President Xi also received an invitation to Trump’s inauguration on Monday. However, he will not participate in it personally and will be represented by Vice President Chan Cheng. CNN reports that Trump is also interested in visiting India, where he would like to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
