The social network TikTok cut off access to its users in the United States late Saturday night local time. This happened shortly before the law that will ban the platform in the country came into force. TASR informs about it according to the reports of the Reuters, AP and AFP agencies.
“A law has been passed in the US banning TikTok, which unfortunately means you can’t use (it) yet. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on how to restore TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned,” the company said in an official statement.
As of Saturday 10:50 p.m. Washington time (Sunday 4:50 a.m. CET), the app was not available in the Apple and Google mobile app stores. When TikTok users opened the app, they encountered the company’s pop-up, in which she commented on the situation.
On Friday, the US Supreme Court approved a law according to which the Chinese owner must sell TikTok by Sunday, otherwise the platform will be banned in the US. The law includes a transitional period of 90 days during which the ban can be delayed.
Trump commented on the matter on Friday on the Truth Social social network. “The decision of the Supreme Court was expected and everyone must respect it. My decision on TikTok will come in the not-too-distant future, but I have to have time to review the situation.” stated.
During his first term, Trump unsuccessfully tried to ban TikTok, but became a user during his 2024 election campaign. In a video he published on the platform in June, he even declared that he would “save TikTok”.
