He had been admitted to the ICU at Rios D’Or Hospital, in Rio de Janeiro, since January 6th, initially due to dehydration and abdominal pain. After carrying out tests, a tumor was identified in the pancreas.

With an established career in sports journalism, Léo Batista is a respected figure on Brazilian television. In 1970, he joined Rede Globo, where he worked for more than 50 years. Known for his work at Globo Esporte, he has participated in other important programs on the network, such as Jornal Nacional, Fantástico and Jornal Hoje. The journalist covered 13 World Cups and reported the deaths of Getúlio Vargas, Princess Diana and Ayrton Senna.
