Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) defended this Saturday, 18th, a proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC) suggested by an ally that, if approved by Congress, could benefit him in the 2026 elections. The Constitution, today, stipulates 35 years as the minimum age to assume the positions of president, vice-president and senator. The project by federal deputy Eros Biondini (PL-MG), which is in the phase of collecting signatures to be filed with the Chamber, reduces the age requirement for these positions to 30 years old.

According to the justification presented by Biondini, the proposal “aims to promote greater inclusion and participation of young people in politics and in leadership positions”. “The current scenario still limits youth representation in decision-making positions, which can cause a gap between elected representatives and the demands of new generations”, says the parliamentarian.

On X (formerly Twitter), Nikolas Ferreira recalled that PECs do not need presidential sanction after approval in the Chamber and Senate to come into force. The deputy turns 30 in May.

Eros Biondini’s project also reduces the minimum ages to assume other elected positions. The current 30 years required to be governor or vice-governor would increase to 28, while the minimum age of 21 to be federal deputy, state (or district) deputy, mayor and vice-mayor would become 20 years.

Eros Biondini is the father of Minas Gerais state deputy Chiara Biondini (PP). At the time she ran for office in the 2022 elections, Chiara was 20 years old. While the others elected took office in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG) on February 1, 2023, Chiara took office on February 22, the day she turned 21. The change was possible because the Internal Regulations of the Minas Gerais Assembly allow for inauguration within 30 days from the first meeting of the House.

To the EstadãoBiondini admits that the project was inspired by his party colleague and state bench, but states that he already defended the “protagonism of young people” in politics. “I already had this thought, evaluating the reality of politics in Brazil and the need to update legislation due to the protagonism of young people. The phenomenon of the repercussion and result of Nikolas’ video in recent days only confirmed this view.”

surpassing Lula. Interlocutors from Planalto admitted to the Estadão Column that Nikolas’ viral was the main factor in the crisis that led to the repeal of the rule.

Eros Biondini’s PEC is not yet being processed in the Chamber. PECs need signatures from at least 171 federal deputies to be considered in the House. Biondini says he will still start contacts with parliamentarians opposing the Lula government, “but the acceptance is great”.

The expectation is that the text will reach the necessary signatures by February 2nd, the return of the parliamentary recess. Once the proposal has been filed, the PEC’s first step would be discussion in the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee.

“The PL’s name for the Presidency of the Republic is Bolsonaro, but in a possible situation of ineligibility, which we think is absurd, Nikolas could be our name for president of Brazil”, says Eros Biondini.

Among those considered on the right to run for President in 2026, names such as governors Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), São Paulo, and Ronaldo Caiado (União), Goiás appear.
