Our ancestors knew it many tens and hundreds of years back in the past – and they knew well why they were preparing it. Seemingly ordinary bone broth has literally magical effects on our body.

Our grandmothers already believed in the healing effects of strong bone broth. Modern scientific studies only confirm this knowledge gained through experience and can justify it with concrete data that we can rely on. Yes, that’s right, regular consumption of such a broth leads to an improvement in health.

Research confirms the effects

Of course, scientists do not rely only on theoretical information in their research, but have also embarked on the path of practical tests – this time on animals. Here it became clear that after some time their problems with inflammatory diseases and even osteoporosis began to disappear. When it works in animals, it is obvious that the mentioned food will also have the same effects on the human organism. Why actually?

Collagen and other substances

The beneficial effects of bone broth are due to the content of many beneficial substances, one of the first of which is collagen, which is the basic building block of connective tissues, benefits the joints and their pain-free movement, as well as the health of the skin and hair. Glucosamine and chondroitin also help to regenerate joints (as we know well from TV commercials) – and these substances are also found in the broth.

Bone minerals

In addition to other beneficial substances and elements, the inflammations in the body also help eliminate amino acids, which the broth offers us in relatively abundant quantities. These are mainly glycine, glutamine and proline. But even that is not all that quite ordinary properly boiled bones can offer us.

The content of minerals, of which we can name both calcium and magnesium, or phosphorus, are important elements that help maintain the strength and appropriate bone structure even in old age. It is about preventing osteoporosis, which can mean big problems.

The work pays off

If you have decided to prepare such a life-giving potion for yourself and your family, you will have to follow several inviolable rules. But believe that it will really pay off and you will not regret either the time or the effort. So let’s take a look at how to get the most out of bones.

Bones, vegetables, spices and most of all time

First, get enough bones (at least one, but preferably two kilograms). It can be beef, pork or poultry bones, but you should check if they also have cartilage on them. These are very important for our purposes.

For the right broth, add classic root vegetables, i.e. carrots, celery and parsley, but also onions, or a few cloves of garlic. Season everything in the pot with salt, pepper and herbs of your choice.

Until then, it is actually the basis of any ordinary broth. However, in order to release the maximum amount of minerals from the bones, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar (preferably apple) to the pot. Then just add a sufficient amount of water and you can start slow cooking, which should last at least 12 hours.

Is it possible to improve such a broth? Surprisingly though, the answer is yes. We don’t have to put the bones in the pot raw, but if we roast them in the oven for at least half an hour to an hour before cooking, the broth will acquire another dimension that will make the family fight over it. Don’t be afraid to make more stock at once, once you drain it and ideally also strain it, it will last a really long time in the fridge in a sealed mason jar.
