The 11th International Social Cinema Exhibition (Monstrare), which will take place in Loulé, in the district of Faro, from the 18th to the 25th of January, will give “special attention to the moment of transition that the world is currently experiencing”.
The organizers indicate, in a statement, that the social cinema exhibition, which is once again part of the Algarve Film Week program, is made up of documentaries, shorts and feature films, as well as workshops, conversations, moments focused on the industry and a program from MOTELx festival.
The Loulé Chamber initiative, which has free entry, starts at the Auditorium Solar da Música Nova, on January 18th at 5:00 pm, with the presentation of the Audiovisual Support Program and at 6:00 pm the performance “{EYE} Cult”, according to the program.
The following day marks the beginning of the cinema program with the screening, at the Pavilhão Multiúsos 25 de Abril, in Almancil, of “Robot Dreams – Amigos Improbáveis”, an animated film directed by Pablo Berger, which tells the story of friendship between a dog and a robot in New York in the 1980s.
As part of Algarve Filme Week, the Lisbon festival MOTELx, dedicated to horror films, was invited to program two days of the exhibition.
On January 20th, the film “Flow”, by Gints Zilbalodis, was shown, an animation that was awarded by the public and the jury at the Annecy festival, the largest animation festival in the world, and which also won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film .
On the same day, “Oddity”, the new paranormal horror film by Irishman Damian McCarthy, which premiered in September at MOTELx, will be shown.
On the 21st, the best Portuguese short film at MOTELx is presented and in the evening the film “Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person”, by Ariane Louis-Seize, which won the award for Best Direction in the Giornate degli Autori parallel section of the Venice Festival in 2023.
Monstrare 2025 shows social cinema in Loulé, with national premieres, award-winning animations and programming from the MOTELx festival. It is shown at Escola Básica 2/3 D. Dinis, in Quarteira, on January 22nd.
“Nuclear Energy Now!”
At night, at the Cineteatro Louletano, in a national premiere, “Noites Claras” is shown, written and directed by Paulo Filipe Monteiro, a film that had its premiere at the Festival del Cinema Europeo, in Italy.
The documentary “Nuclear Energy Now!”, directed by Oliver Stone, which according to the organizers marks a statement regarding the fear about harmless low-level radiation and the confusion between nuclear weapons and nuclear energy, is shown on January 23, at 9 pm :00, at Cineteatro Louletano.
On the night of January 24th, also at Cineteatro Louletano, “L’Empire”, by Bruno Dumont, the film that won the Jury Prize at the Berlinale 2024, was shown for the first time in Portugal.
“Lindo”, by Margarida Gramaxo, closes the cinema program, on January 25th, at 2:30 pm, a fictional documentary that follows a turtle hunter from Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe, who decides to change his life to start protect this marine species against its predators.
Parallel to the exhibition, on January 25th at 6pm, the 5th presentation ceremony of the Cinetendinha Awards, promoted by film critic Rui Pedro Tendinha, will take place.
