The Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library, in Tavira, is one of six Portuguese libraries selected to join the European project CLAD – Citizens & Libraries Against Disinformation, which aims to raise awareness among citizens about the dangers of disinformation and provide them with tools to identify it and fight it. The project, which began with an international conference held on November 26, 2024 at the Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries, will run until 2026.
In Tavira, the project’s actions will be focused on two main themes: “Roots and Identities”, which addresses issues related to cultural minorities, and “Get your water!”, dedicated to environmental challenges. These initiatives, aimed at adults, aim to promote a more informed and active community, through training, public debates and workshops.
Among the project’s main activities are holding public forums, training sessions to combat misinformation, and providing materials and tools that help citizens identify fake news. Additionally, collaboration will be established with local institutions and media to disseminate good practices.
Coordinated by the Goethe-Institut, CLAD has the participation of the Portuguese Association of Librarians, Archivists and Information and Documentation Professionals (BAD), the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB) and the Old Town of Bratislava . In Portugal, in addition to Tavira, the libraries of Grândola, Santa Maria da Feira, Castelo Branco, Condeixa-a-Nova and Bragança also participate in the project, along with three libraries in Slovakia.
“Our objective is to reinforce the role of the library as a center of reliable information and a space for citizen participation, contributing to a more enlightened society prepared to distinguish facts from fake news”, highlights the City of Tavira.
CLAD is co-financed by the European Union, through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme. All activities will be free and open to the public.
