In the beauty pageant, the winner gets the title of Miss and it belongs to her for the whole year. Even our Czech beer has its own competition and the best gets the title of Czech beer. But last year’s winner surprised quite a bit. The title of České pivo 2024 went to a pale lager, and surprisingly, it’s not Pilsen. How is that?
What beer did the judges taste
The beer “beauty show” has been organized by the Czech Association of Breweries and Malthouses since 2001, and the Brewing and Malt Research Institute regularly invites cooperation. A total of 26 breweries took part in last year’s edition, which applied for one hundred judged samples. The judges evaluated several attributes, namely fullness of taste, cut and color.

Winner of the tasting competition in the main category light lager became Radegast Ryze hořká 12 (twelve). “Every day we try to brew beer with a distinct and typical bitterness differently than others do. We appreciate the award very much and it is a motivation for us to continue our hard work every day,” said Ivo Kaňák, who holds the position of manager of the Radegast Brewery, when he was satisfied with the victory.

On the poly eleven-degree lagers Primátor 11 lager reigns supreme. And on the podium in the category pale draft beer became Zubr Gold.
Where is Pilsen 12?
However, the unusual defeat of the “Plznička” by Radegast has its own explanation. She did not enter the competition at all. “Plzeň 12, a Czech jewel, deliberately did not take part in the competition in accordance with the agreement with the producer Plzeňský Prazdroj, we also give space to other beers,” explained Tomáš Slunéčko, director of the Czech Breweries and Malts Association, to Kupi.cz magazine, adding that a record 101 samples were entered this year. However, it must be added in one breath that the winner Radegast Ryze hořká 12 falls under Plzeňský Prazdroj, just like its more popular brother Plzeň 12. So the win remained with the parent company anyway.
What brewers think
“I like our classics the most – Plzeň and beers in general that have a real punch. I don’t buy Radegast bitter 12, but I believe that someone might like the bitterness,” Tomáš is clear.
“I stand behind Kozel 11 beer. I never drink anything else, and if they don’t have it in a pub somewhere, I go somewhere else. I don’t like bitter beers,” Monika, a representative of the female generation, explains her point of view this time.
