At least 60 people were killed and others injured today in , from the overturning of a tanker truck carrying gasoline.

The overturned tanker caused a petrol leak and explosion, according to the country’s Federal Road Safety Service (FRSC).

The accident in Niger state followed a similar explosion in Jigawa state in October 2024, resulting in the death of 147 people. It was one of the worst tragedies in Africa’s most populous country.

FRSC Niger State Area Commander-in-Charge Kumar Chaquan said most of the victims were impoverished local residents who ran to collect the spilled petrol on the road after the tanker overturned.

“The tanker caught fire which surrounded another tanker. So far, 60 bodies have been collected from the crash site,” Chaquan said.
