President-elect Donald Trump is not ruling out the possibility that China will continue to own TikTok if steps are taken to ensure that American users’ data is protected and stored in the US, new national security adviser Mike Waltz told CNN this week. Sunday.
TikTok stopped working for its 170 million US users on Sunday after a law went into effect banning the app’s continued operation due to US politicians’ concerns that Americans’ data could be misused by Chinese authorities.
Waltz told CNN that the president-elect is working to “save TikTok” and has not ruled out the possibility of continued Chinese ownership, along with “firewalls to ensure data is protected here on American soil.”
Trump said he would “very likely” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve on the ban after taking office on Monday, a promise the app cited in a notice posted to users.
Waltz also spoke to CBS News on Sunday and said Trump needed time to resolve issues related to TikTok, adding that an extension of time was needed for the app to evaluate proposed buyers.
