Result interrupts sequences of increases and accumulation moves away from pre-pandemic levels; record was in 2019, with Bolsonaro

issued 2.1 million passports in 2024, a 14% reduction compared to the previous year. The result in the 2nd year of the president’s (PT) government interrupts the sequences of post-pandemic increases, when document registrations fell to around 1 million.

The record for emissions was in 2019, with 3 million units printed, in the 1st year of (today in PL) the Presidency

All months of 2024 performed worse than the same periods in 2023. It is common for demand for passports to fall in recent months, but the slowdown this time was more intense.

Before the pandemic, in 2019, the average number of passports issued per month was 248.8 thousand. Last year, 173.5 thousand.

The drop in registrations coincided with the rise in the dollar, which rose from R$6 at the end of 2024 and still remains at a very high level.

As the following infographic shows, when the value of the US currency rises, the demand for passports falls:

This bad result comes at a time when the economy is booming. The airline sector will reach 118 million passengers in 2024 and had its 2nd best year in history.

Passengers who flew to international destinations last year were 24.9 million, a record performance. Never before had so many people traveled abroad.

The passport is obtained well in advance by people who intend to travel internationally.

Fewer document issuances mean fewer travel plans. Less international travel results in slowing activity for airlines.
