The influence of Rui Costa (PT) places Bahia as a possible replacement for Rio de Janeiro, previously the favorite to host the event
The summit of heads of state of the Brics, the bloc formed by BBrazil, Russia, Inndia, China and South Africa (Sout Africa, in English), will be in July 2025 in Brazil, but there is no defined city yet. 5 months before the event, the president’s government (PT) is considering taking the summit to Bahia, under the influence of the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa (PT). Before, it was taken for granted that the meeting would be held in Rio de Janeiro.
In recent weeks, a delegation from Itamaraty and the Civil House went to Bahia to visit resorts in Costa Verde of the State and analyze the possibility of the event being held in the region.
The dispute between Rio de Janeiro and Bahia delays Lula’s decision on the venue for the summit. According to the Poder360there are still other cities being analyzed.
Brazilian diplomacy is concerned about the delay. The assessment is that delegations from countries and guests would already need to know the location to organize their trip to Brazil.
At the beginning of December 2024, the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), reinforced his request to Lula to host the Brics summit. He had already made the same proposal during the launch of the New Year’s Eve 2025 program.
“I have already asked and am making a public appeal, offering the city of Rio de Janeiro for President Lula to host the Brics here next year. The city is ready and will organize itself to hold another great meeting”, said Paes at the time.
In November 2024, Rio de Janeiro also hosted the G20 summit meeting. The meeting, which lasted 2 days, brought together the heads of state of the world’s largest economies and in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
In another move, Paes announced his appointment as president of the (Instituto Pereira Passos) in December 2024. The body is responsible for carrying out research, studies and urban and socioeconomic analyzes for city planning.
