Bia Haddad fell in the doubles bracket of the Australian Open in the early hours of Monday (20), 24 hours after saying goodbye to the singles tournament.
She and her partner, German Laura Siegemund, were defeated by the favorites for the competition title, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Ellen Routliffe, from New Zealand. Victory guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.
The result was peaceful for the winning pair, who scored two sets at 6/7(5), 3/6 and 6/4. Brazil’s only chances in the tournament are now concentrated in the youth groups.
Dabrowski and Routliffe will face Italian Renata Zarazua and Japanese Miyu Kato in search of a place in the semifinals.
Haddad and Siegemund even started the match better, but lost the first break point of the game when the German missed an easy smash, close to the net.
In the next game, Siegemund had his serve broken and his rivals took the lead. The advantage lasted until the tenth game, when Bia and Laura returned the break and equalized the score shortly after. The decision came in the tie-break. Two simple volleys missed by Dabrowski and Routliffe made the difference. Brazilian and German took advantage and scored 7/6(5).
The second set was favorable to the top seeds, who responded quickly, scoring a break in the opening game. Bia and Laura still tied the partial at 2/2, but the balance was short-lived. With two more breaks, Dabrowski and Routliffe made it 6/3 and forced the third set.
The decisive part began with the teams exchanging breaks in the second and third games. Shortly afterwards, the score showed 2/2. The game continued like this, without breaks, until the tenth game. Dabrowski shone with good returns and a winning volley that defined the match.
