Do you air your bedding on the balcony? Check how to do it properly in winter

Is it worth taking the bedding off the bed every morning, taking it out to the terrace, hanging it up and after some time taking it off and bringing it back to the bedroom cold? It turns out that yes, and there are many arguments in favor of it.

  • Elimination of mites and bacteria – mites die at temperatures below -15°C, so even a few hours in the cold can effectively remove them.
  • – frost removes the odors of sweat and other substances that accumulate in fabrics.
  • Better sleep quality – after winter airing, bedding becomes more airy and cool, which may affect comfortable sleep.
  • Natural disinfection – frost and fresh air help reduce the number of microorganisms without the need to use chemical agents.
  • Reducing humidity – low temperature causes moisture to evaporate, so the bedding does not become smelly and musty.

Winter can be varied and capricious. There are days when airing your bedding outside will do more harm than good. Certainly avoid days with smogand the pollution exceeds permissible standards (you probably don’t want to sleep in it afterwards?).

Choose the right weather – the best conditions are temperature below -10°C (ideally -15°C and below), no snow or rain, moderate wind (not too strong to avoid the bedding being blown onto the neighbor’s property).

It is also important the way you hang the bedding. It is best to spread it on a balcony drying rack or railing. Avoid direct contact with a wet surface, as this may cause freezing and ice formation on the fabric (humidity also increases after dark, so plan airing during the day, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.). It is a good idea to fasten the bedding with clothespins so that it does not fall off.

Leave the bedding on the balcony for at least 2 hours. After bringing the bedding into the apartment, it is worth shaking it lightly to remove any dirt. If the bedding is very cold, allow it to warm up for a few minutes before using it.

Not every type of bedding responds well to low temperatures. Here is an overview of the fabrics:

  • cotton – tolerates frost very well, does not lose its properties,
  • linen – perfect for airing in winter, it releases moisture well,
  • wool – an excellent choice because it does not absorb moisture,
  • microfiber – may become stiff in frost, but generally tolerates low temperatures well,
  • satin, silk – require caution as they may be damaged by extreme temperatures.

Airing bedding in winter is effective, natural and free way to blankets and pillows and getting rid of mites and bacteria. Follow our tips and you will definitely be pleased with the effect!
