He defined it as one of his priorities to expand the (National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters) until 2026 so that it can cover municipalities where around 70% of the population lives.
Today, the center monitors 1,133 municipalities where approximately 60% of the population lives.
The goal is to increase this number to 1,942 by 2026, says the minister (Science and Technology). “Our focus is to save lives, right? So, Cemaden has this role. This expansion is in the PAC (Growth Acceleration Program)”, he adds.
“In addition to satellites, we have hydrological stations and geological stations that measure soil moisture on the hill and that measure when the tide is rising to warn people to leave. So, we are going to expand and are simultaneously trying to develop more sophisticated instruments.”
Cemaden monitors disaster risks, such as landslides, floods and floods.
