José Genoíno undergoes surgery to remove the tumor and is hospitalized in SP

The former federal deputy and former president of the PT, José Genoíno, has been hospitalized since last Thursday, 16th, at the ACCamargo Cancer Center hospital, in São Paulo, where he underwent surgery to remove a a tumor.

According to the medical bulletin, the procedure “occurred as expected, without complications or complications and lasted 4 hours”. The surgery performed by Genoíno was in the retroperitoneum region, which is a membrane responsible for lining the viscera of the abdominal cavity.

“After the procedure, José Genoíno Neto was sent, hemodynamically stable, to the ICU, where he remained for around 24 hours. On the morning of 01/18/2025, the patient was discharged from the ICU and has already returned to the room where he will remain under observation”, says the statement signed by doctor Samuel Aguiar, who is leader of the Colorectal Tumors Reference Center.

Genoíno presided over the PT between 2003 and 2005, when the Mensalão scandal broke. He was indicted for the crimes of active corruption and conspiracy in 2012. Two years later, he was acquitted of the crime of forming a gang, but the conviction for passive corruption was maintained. Still in the same year, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) extinguished the former deputy’s sentence.

Currently, Genoíno has been critical of some measures taken by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), such as the fiscal framework.
