Pope Francis has described US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants as a “disgrace”.
The pontiff was asked during an interview on Italian television this Sunday (19) about the plans of the new Trump administration.
“If it is true, it will be a shame, because it makes poor people who have nothing pay the unpaid bill. It won’t work. That’s not how you resolve things,” said Pope Francis.
Defending immigrants was a fundamental part of his mandate at the head of the Catholic Church, insisting that they should be welcomed and integrated into societies.
In the 2016 election, Pope Francis suggested that Trump was “not Christian” for his anti-immigration views. He has signaled he is ready to take a critical approach to the new Trump administration with his nomination of Cardinal Robert McElroy as the next archbishop of Washington.
McElroy described mass deportations of immigrants as “incompatible with Catholic doctrine.”
Pope Francis’ speeches were given during an interview with the program “Che Tempo Che Fa”, broadcast by Nove, owned by the company’s controlling company. CNNa Warner Bros. Discovery.
