SIC’s correspondent in Türkiye, José Pedro Tavares, explained, in the Morning Edition, that despite the “very tense” relations between Trump and Erdogan, an alignment of strategies between the two is expected.
Relations between the US and Turkey, the two largest armies in the have been “really bad” for decades, explains José Pedro Tavares, SIC correspondent in Türkiye. However, Erdogan sees the possible return Trump an opportunity for rapprochement.
“Ankara has a very positive expectation that Trump’s new mandate will mean an improvement in relations between the two countries”, with possible alignments in the Middle East and in Iran containment policies, explained José Pedro Tavares.
However, challenges remain – starting with the religious issue.
“Everything seems to indicate that this new Trump term will be even more dominated by evangelicals. VMany of the people in his administration are religious ultranationalists, and they will not look kindly on the Sunni expansionism of the Erdogan regime,” said the journalist.
On the other hand, the SIC correspondent also highlighted that another obstacle could be the contradictory views that both countries have on Israel and Palestine.
Still, there is hope for “a new page in relations between NATO’s two largest armies.”
