Music is by composer Leopoldo Miguez and lyrics by Medeiros and Albuquerque; created to exalt the Republic

The Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic was published on January 21, 1890. The music is by composer Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902) and the lyrics are by composer Medeiros e Albuquerque (1867-1934).

The provisional government of Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca (1827-1892) launched a competition aiming to formalize a new Anthem for Brazil. Leopoldo and Medeiros won the contest, but the song ended up not being used as the country’s new Anthem.

In a decree, the Brazilian government stipulated that the creation be used as the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic.

The Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic is a civic song that pays homage to the Proclamation of the Republic, which occurred on November 15, 1889. It was created, therefore, to exalt the republican regime and aims to associate the Republic with the arrival of freedom.

Currently, the anthem is not performed very often and is not common to be heard in official ceremonies.

Read the lyrics of the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic:

Be an unfolded canopy of light.

Under the wide expanse of these skies

This rebellious corner that the past

Come and redeem the most vile things!

Be a hymn of glory that speaks

Of hope, of a new future!

With visions of triumphs pack

Whoever fights for him emerges!

Freedom! Freedom!

Spread your wings over us!

From the fights in the storm

Let us hear your voice!

We don’t even believe that slaves once

Have there been in such a noble country…

Today the red flash of dawn

Think brothers, not hostile tyrants.

We are all the same! To the future

We will know, together, to take

Our august banner that, pure,

Shine, ovante, of the Fatherland on the altar!

Freedom! Freedom!

Spread your wings over us!

From the fights in the storm

Let us hear your voice!

If you need to have brave breasts

Let there be blood on our banner,

Living blood of the hero Tiradentes

Named this bold pavilion!

Messengers of peace, we want peace,

Love is our strength and power

But from war in supreme trances

You will see us fight and win!

Freedom! Freedom!

Spread your wings over us!

From the fights in the storm

Let us hear your voice!

From Ipiranga it is necessary that the cry

Be a superb cry of faith!

Brazil has already emerged free,

Standing on the royal purples.

So, Brazilians, go ahead!

Green blonds let us reap the praises!

Let our country be triumphant,

Free land of free brothers!

Freedom! Freedom!

Spread your wings over us!

From the fights in the storm

Let us hear your voice!
