Corinthians advisors met this Monday (20) at Parque São Jorge to decide the future of president Augusto Melo, but the vote that would define the top hat’s impeachment process was postponed.
Before analyzing the action filed by 90 councilors, there was a vote on the admissibility of the merits of the matter. Despite a favorable decision, albeit by a small margin, it was decided to postpone the vote on removal due to the time.
As the meeting lasted until 11:30 pm, many councilors had already left, especially the older ones.
Now, it will be up to the president of the Deliberative Council, Romeu Tuma Júnior, to set a new date for voting on the process that could determine Augusto Melo’s removal.
Until a new date is announced, the representative of the black and white team will continue to perform his role normally.
Augusto Melo’s request for removal is based on alleged irregularities in the sponsorship contract with the sports betting house VaideBet. An investigation by the Civil Police, which has not yet been concluded, investigates the suspicion that the intermediary in the negotiation was an orange man — the club claims to be a victim.
The complaint refers to the payment of R$ 25.2 million, as an intermediation commission for the agreement with VaideBet, to the Social Media Design Network, which belongs to Alex Fernando André, Alex Cassundé, who worked in Augusto’s campaign. This company passed on part of the commission to Neoway Soluções Integradas em Serviços, registered in the name of Edna Oliveira dos Santos, a woman who lives in a humble residence in Peruíbe and did not even know the company existed.
In June, the betting site announced the unilateral termination of the agreement, as its image was damaged by the case. At the time, in a statement, Corinthians stated that “all negotiations, including sponsorships, took place legally with regularly constituted companies”. “The club emphasizes that it is not responsible for possible transfers of values to third parties”, said the text.
“Corinthians is a victim”, stated Augusto, in July 2024, in an interview with Sheet. “From the beginning, I have always made myself available. As president, what I want is to clarify as quickly as possible, especially because Corinthians is a victim. From the moment you have an intermediary who does something, from then on other than what he does is his problem.”
