“For international security.” historically under the Danish umbrella although with certain independence in many legislative aspects.
As Trump announced just a few weeks ago, Greenland “has to be American to provide international security.” In fact, the newly appointed president of the United States stated that “it is not necessary for Washington,” but rather it is “for international security”, since – according to him – Chinese and Russian ships pass through its waters without any type of control.
In recent days he has gone a step further and has assured that it will be Denmark itself that will join this American initiative. “I’m sure Denmark will join us. It’s costing them a lot of money to maintain it,” he asserted.
With Chinese and Russian threats as a pretext, Trump hopes to scare the Greenlandic population, who for the moment has not commented on the matter, and there seems to be a division of opinion regarding the matter.
However, those who were totally opposed to this incursion were the Danish and Greenlandic authorities, who rebuked Trump for threatening to send troops to the territory to gain control of the regionsomething that was also criticized by the French Executive, and to a lesser extent, by the British.
But not everything has been words, also actions. Like sending a US government delegation to the site, led by the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr. This was considered an offense and attack on the sovereignty of Greenland, which translated as an offense and attack on the sovereignty of Greenland by its authorities.
In fact, these types of acts have unleashed a whole string of criticisms that do not seem to affect the American magnate at all. From Copenhagen they said that the island is not in anyone’s hands and that the US should not interfere in the internal affairs of the island.
Therefore, historically it has become a desire of some of the main powers in the world, considering it key in commercial and security terms.
