Donald Trump is sworn in as President of the United States

Donald Trump was sworn in this Monday (20) as president of the United States. Upon entering the rotunda of the Capitol, the seat of the United States Congress, he greeted President Joe Biden.

The oath was administered by US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Trump used the same Bible that Abraham Lincoln used at the 1861 inauguration, in addition to a personal Bible.

The ceremony was adapted due to the extreme cold – temperatures could reach -12 °C in Washington this Monday – and was moved to the inside of the Capitol. The last time this happened was in 1985, at Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration.

Later this Monday, Trump and JD Vance, who took office as vice president of the United States, are expected to attend a presidential parade, which has also been adapted and will be held at the Capital One arena.

Other scheduled events are balls, in which the US president is expected to dance with first lady Melania Trump. There is an expectation that he will also speak.

Inaugural speech

After the oath, Donald Trump gave a speech, in which he stated that the “golden age” of the United States has begun and that it will build a nation that is “proud, prosperous and free”. See the main highlights in this article.

He criticized Joe Biden’s government, claiming that the federal administration did not know how to deal with internal crises, and highlighted that there is a “crisis of trust”.

Trump addressed several other issues, such as freedom of expression, tariffs and immigration — at this point, he announced that he will declare a national emergency on the border with Mexico.

He further stressed that he will “end the administration’s policy of trying to introduce race and gender into every aspect of American private life.”

“We will forge a society that is ‘colorblind’ and based on merit. From today onwards, it will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female,” he commented.

Heads of State and businesspeople attend Trump’s inauguration

In addition to Joe Biden, former United States presidents were present at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony, including Barack Obama.

Javier Milei, president of Argentina, and Giorgia Meloni, also attended. Trump invited them, despite it not being customary to invite heads of state to the US presidential inauguration.

Behind the Republican’s family members are technology entrepreneurs, such as Elon Musk, owner of X, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, and Jeff Bezos, founder and executive president of Amazon.
