Decision repeats feat of the 1st term in the White House; it revokes the US International Climate Finance Plan
The president Donald Trump (Republican Party) returned to to remove the United States of the Paris Agreement, an international treaty to reduce the emission of polluting gases and minimize the impacts of climate change. The decision, made by the Republican, was made through a decree signed on Monday (20 January 2025), in the Oval Office, at the White House (Washington DC).
The Republican also immediately revoked o and any financial commitment made by the country in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate. The decision document is titled “Putting the US First in International Environmental Agreements.” Read the full text in (PDF – 85 kB) and (PDF – 86 kB).
According to the document, the “International energy agreements must prioritize economic efficiency, the promotion of American prosperity, consumer choice and fiscal restraint in all foreign commitments that concern energy policy”.
In his first term, Trump also withdrew the US from Paris Agreement. The North American country is one of the largest emitters of polluting gases in the world. With the decision, the country will join Iran, Libya and Yemen –who are the only ones who are not part of the agreement.
For the USA to officially leave the treaty, a period of 1 year is required, counting after the country notifies the UN (United Nations) of the decision.
UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS
The Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. More than 190 countries participated in the UN conference to discuss the points of the agreement. The final document establishes that the increase in Earth’s temperature should be limited to 2 ºC above pre-industrial levels.
The signatory countries agreed to achieve “Peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible” e, “then initiate rapid reductions to reach a balance between emissions” originated by human activities and those “absorbed by carbon sinks during the 2nd half of the century”.
