We Czechs are a nation of gardeners. Growing flowers, vegetables and fruits at home or in the garden is a passionate hobby of tens of thousands of us. True, it requires patience. The advantage is the own and often purely organic harvest. Here are some tips for beginners on how to care for plants and seedlings “from a young age”.
Which plants grow the fastest?
If patience is not one of your strong points, the easiest way is to focus on flora that grows quickly. Female cooks will certainly appreciate herbs that they can grow at home relatively quickly.
For example, such a small flower with grown basil costs 50 crowns, while the price of a package of seeds for planting starts at 15 crowns. Of course, other costs are soil and flower pots, but that’s about it. When growing several types of herbs, planting at home is definitely worth it.

In addition to basil, chives, rosemary and mint are fast-growing herbs. If you don’t have enough patience even in the garden, reach for radishes, lettuce and lavender, which cheer up the balcony, terrace and garden with purple color. For ornamental plants, you can try, for example, bamboo, which can grow up to 90 centimeters in one day. And that’s quite a lot.
In order for the seeds to germinate easily, it is most practical to throw them in a glass of water for a few hours, into which you have added a few drops of a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. This softens the seed coat, which the roots then break through more easily.
Reach for the plastic
Another tip is to use plastic flower pots in black. Why? The plastic material perfectly retains the much-needed heat for the plants. And black color absorbs heat better. Plastic flower pots are therefore a great choice for increasing the temperature of the soil in which you plant seeds and seedlings.
Fertilize abundantly
True, not everyone is a supporter of fertilization, some go the way of choosing a quality substrate and do not want to use any fertilizers. But nutrients in the soil do not last forever, so we recommend fertilizing, fertilizing and fertilizing again. In order for plants to be healthy, strong and resistant to pests, they naturally need water and nutrients. Of course, when they grow up, with young sprouts, the fertilizer would destroy the roots.
If you don’t like chemically produced fertilizers, which are littered with entire shelves in gardening supplies, consult an experienced gardener or the seller directly, after all, there are also purely natural remedies.
How about real cow dung? Or you can make your own broth at home, chicken droppings or ferns work great. We would also like to add that liquid fertilizers are absorbed faster than solid ones, but the final choice is then only yours.
Don’t be afraid to transplant
It takes a bit of work, but it’s always worth it. When the plant grows after germination, its roots have no place to develop in the small pot. He squirms and tries his best to find more room. But where it isn’t, it isn’t here. When transplanting, be sure to immediately change the substrate from which the plant draws the necessary nutrients for its beneficial growth.
How to care for tomato seedlings
Tomatoes are popular in our kitchen and properly pre-growing their seedlings is absolutely key to a good harvest. Here are some tips on how to do it. Choose a proven variety, the gardener next door will surely be happy to advise. After all, you can agree with him on the “loan” of tomato seeds, or he will give you a few seedlings right away. Provide them with the right temperature, always between 20-25 degrees Celsius. Also water regularly and give them plenty of light.
