The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, denied that the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, had weakened himself after the government’s defeat over the new inspection of Pix; on the contrary, “it became stronger”. According to the minister, the government never thought about taxing the payment method.
“On the contrary,” said Rui after being asked if Haddad came out weaker in the episode. “Haddad came out stronger,” he commented.
And the minister told journalists: “From that meeting, my feeling, having been in government for two years and participating in several meetings, is that, of all the meetings I participated in, this was the one I liked the most, the that I most felt a perception of unity, of galvanization of all the ministers.”
The statement came after Costa participated in the first ministerial meeting of 2025 promoted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The meeting lasted 7 hours and took place at Granja do Torto, one of the official residences of the Presidency of the Republic.
“Haddad could not have been weakened because there was no concrete or true measure”, commented Costa. “What was created was factious, lying news to try to terrorize the population.”
In his speech, Rui Costa praised Pix. “It remains strong, it is more than a means of payment today, it structures society’s relationships”, he mentioned. “Under no circumstances was it thought at any time to tax or tax Pix, or that it would be comparable to receiving income to be taxed.”
