South Korean police have taken these precautions following violent protests over the weekend. She detained 90 people with them.

South Korean President Jun Sok-jol was taken to a military hospital on Tuesday after a hearing at the Constitutional Court in the matter of his impeachment – removal from office. This was stated by anonymous sources for the Jonhap agency, writes TASR.

The reason for Jun’s visit to the hospital was not immediately known. The suspended president promised in court on Tuesday that he would cooperate with the judges.

A court spokesman announced that Jun’s legal team had requested the subpoena of at least 24 witnesses. At the same time, he sought to justify his December attempt to impose martial law as a necessary measure against electoral fraud, which allegedly helped the opposition win last year’s elections.

Thousands of supporters

About 4,000 supporters of Jun gathered in front of the Constitutional Court building. Nearly 200 police buses were on the scene to create a barricade for better crowd control. The police took these precautionary measures after violent protests over the weekend by Jun’s supporters to express their disapproval of his arrest.

The Constitutional Court began the impeachment trial of the president on December 27 to investigate charges against Jun for allegedly violating the country’s constitution. Jun was indicted by the Corruption Perceptions Office (CIO) in connection with the declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, which only lasted six hours before being overturned by parliament. The CIO requested Jun’s detention, which a South Korean court approved on Sunday. Therefore, he was taken to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday from his separate cell in the prison.

On December 14, deputies voted to start Jun’s impeachment, which will be decided by the Constitutional Court, and until then he is suspended from office. Jun thus became the first sitting president in South Korea’s modern history to be taken into custody.
