The young surfer was rescued in Costa da Caparica, on Saturday. She was transported to Garcia de Orta hospital in critical condition, where she has remained hospitalized since then.
The 23-year-old German girl who drowned on Saturday during a surfing lesson at Praia da Cornélia, in Costa da Caparica, died on Monday morning, SIC confirmed.
The drowning alert was given at around 1:30 pm. The young woman began to face difficulties at sea and was rescued by lifeguards, who carried out resuscitation maneuvers until Samu arrived.
According to a statement from the Portuguese Surf Schools Association, the surf class had five students and a coach, meeting the levels required by the Port Authority of Lisbon. The association also confirmed that the school in question is duly licensed and has certified coaches. They added that they are in contact with authorities and cooperating with the investigation into the incident.
The victim, an Erasmus student in Portugal, was taken to Garcia de Orta Hospital, in Almada.
