Apple peels usually end up in the trash. And that’s a shame! You can make a lot of delicacies from them.

According to statistics, the average Czech eats up to 25 kilos of apples a year. Are you also one of the “apple eaters”? If so, that’s just fine. As the well-known fruit expert, JT Stinnson, said: “Eat an apple a day and the doctor will avoid you.” We are not saying that apples are a panacea and cure all diseases, but anyway, they contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and fiber, which helps with better digestion and cleansing of the body.

The peel has vitamin potential

“Most people just sort the whole apple – even with the skin. But for pies, compotes and other apple delicacies, the fruit is usually peeled and the skins end up in the bin. And that’s a shame,” says the expert, adding that this “apple coat” has a lot of vitamins A, C, K, minerals (magnesium, potassium) and anti-cancer substances. And that’s why you should still use this part of the apple. Here are some tips on how.

Make some punch

Apple peels are sweet and have an intoxicating taste and aroma. Make a punch out of them! How to do it: Put the skins of 15 apples in a saucepan and cover them with sugar. Then throw in 4 cinnamon sticks, 4 cloves, 3 star anise and 2 orange slices (with peel). Cover all the ingredients with water and cook on low heat for about 1 hour. Leave the finished punch to cool. Remove the spices from it and then blend. To keep the drink free of lumps, you can also strain it through a strainer or cloth. Serve the punch warm, preferably with a sprig of rosemary, which gives it an interesting aroma and taste!

The tea tastes great with honey and lemon juice. If you want it to be particularly tasty and aromatic, use skins from bright red apples to give it an even more attractive pink tone.

How else can you use the skins?

Apple peels have great nutritional potential, so you can add them to your morning smoothies. If you have more, you can freeze them and then add them to the drink as needed. If you are not preparing a nutritious morning drink, you can add the skins to salads or cakes. It revives their taste and color!
