A crazy donut for Fat Thursday. They eat it all over the world

In Korea, where they are a snack for children and adults, they are called kkwabaegi. However, they are also known in China – as mahua, in Italy – as treccia, and in the Philippines – shakoy. All of these names describe a similar dessert. Twisted donuts are braids of yeast dough that are deep-fried. They are sweet, fluffy and spongy. They usually have no filling, although in Italy they are sometimes filled with a delicate cream. In Poland, they are perfect as a dessert for Fat Thursday or a carnival party.

Ingredients:

  • 400 g of wheat flour,
  • a pinch of salt,
  • 150 ml of 2% milk,
  • 40 g of butter,
  • egg,
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar,
  • a pack of dry yeast (7 g).

Additionally:

  • oil for frying (about a liter),
  • fine sugar,
  • cinnamon.

How to do it:

Sift the flour with a pinch of salt into a large bowl. Melt the butter in a pot and set aside to cool. Then pour in the milk, add as well as two tablespoons of sugar. Mix everything until combined. Then add the dry yeast and mix again. Cover the pot with a cloth and set aside for 15 minutes – the yeast must start working.

After the time has elapsed, pour the leaven into the bowl with flour, knead the dough with your hands or with a mixer until you obtain a smooth dough. Once ready, cover with a cloth and leave to rise for an hour.

Place the dough on the board and divide it into 12 equal parts. Form each of them into a ball, cover with a cloth and leave to rise again for 30 minutes.

When the dough pieces have doubled in size, use your hands to form them into a log. Then hold one end with your right hand and the other with your left hand and, without lifting the dough from the board, start rolling it in two different directions. Pinch the ends of the wrapped roll together, the dough should twist on its own and take the appropriate shape. Set the wrapped donuts aside to rise again for 30 minutes.

Heat the oil in a pot or deep frying pan. Fry the donuts on both sides until golden brown. Once removed, place on a paper towel to absorb excess fat.

Pour fine sugar and cinnamon into a paper bag, put the donut in it, close the opening with your hands and shake vigorously several times. Place the donuts coated in sugar and cinnamon on a plate.
