He breathed a sigh of relief with the decision to preside, as he feared an “ideological” choice – in other words, the minister () or someone appointed by her.

“I welcome the appointment of the ambassador, who is an extremely prepared, competent person”, says the leader of the ruralist group in Congress, federal deputy Pedro Lupion (PP-PR).

According to him, there was fear of a “political or ideological” choice. “One of the biggest fears was that they would put a mole on Marina, or Marina herself”, he stated.

He says that agribusiness leaders discreetly sent the message to the Lula government that Corrêa do Lago would be well accepted by the sector, due to its technical profile.

Former Minister of Agriculture in the Jair Bolsonaro government, senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) says that the ambassador “is not a Shiite, nor an activist”.

“He is an excellent name for the position, as he knows a lot about this area, from a broad perspective. I had the opportunity to work with him and see his competence when I was Minister of Agriculture and he was Brazil’s ambassador to India”, he stated.

According to the senator, Donald Trump’s coming to power in the USA may have influenced Lula’s choice. “It’s a choice for balance, which wouldn’t happen if it were Marina or someone linked to her”, he said.

Cristina adds that it is important that COP30 is not “a meeting about deforestation”. “It has to be a COP that shows Brazil as a hub for clean energy and technical, sustainable agriculture.”
